Searching for alternative schools is made simple with the following tools. There are three methods to search for schools in your area: by zip code, by category or by keyword.

There are different types of alternative programs to meet different needs, please scroll down to see a description of programs available.

Category Definition:

Continuation Programs - alternative schools or classes that are offered to students enrolled in regular high school or a continuation high school setting. These programs usually offer a broad-based curriculum that includes personalized instruction, work experience, vocational classes, service learning, counseling, and recreational opportunities.

Profile of Student Served:
  • Behind credits
  • Poor grades
  • Repeated failure passing high school exit exam
  • Lack of appropriate grade level skills – below grade level reading etc.
  • Truants / Irregular attendance
  • Dissatisfaction with regular high school program, bored etc.
  • Need scheduling flexibility
  • At-high risk for educational failure

Community / Experience Based - any instructional program that is based in the community, including community service, internship, city (or community) as school, school without walls, and experience or field-based education. (Does not include community day schools)

Profile of Student Served:
  • Alienated / Unmotivated students
  • Deficient in basic skills

  • Emotional or behavioral problems

  • Responsive to different learning styles

  • Dropped Out of School

  • Foster youth / Shelter children

Community Day Schools - serve youth exhibiting high-risk behavior, including those referred by expulsion, probation, or a School Attendance Review Board; provide challenging academic curriculum; and develop pro-social skills and resiliency

Profile of Student Served:

  • Expelled or suspended

  • Juvenile Justice Involved / Probation Status

  • Behavior Problems

  • Substance Abuse Problems

  • Require smaller classes and a more structured setting than regular schools


Opportunity Classes - any instructional program for pupils at-risk, with specialized curriculum, counseling, and psychological services for rehabilitation purposes and not a permanent alternative to regular education. It is typically provided in one classroom with one or more teachers

Profile of Student Served:
  • Truants / Irregular attendance
  • Behavior Problems
  • Require smaller classes and a more structured setting than regular schools
  • Failing in regular school environment


Independent Study - an alternative to classroom instruction consistent with the district’s course of study, engaged in voluntarily by the pupil in accordance with the terms and conditions of a written agreement as required. The pupils’ study is always under the general supervision of a certified district teacher

Profile of Student Served:
  • Responsive to different learning styles, i.e. (thematic learning like arts or music or community based learning)
  • Need schedule flexibility
  • Skills levels not equally developed across all subjects
  • Students that are accelerated learners


Pregnant / Parenting Program - school or program in which pregnant/parenting female and expectant/parenting male pupils who receive specialized services (child care, classes, counseling, case management etc.) are enrolled

  • Mother or Father
  • Expecting Parent

Charter Schools - public schools that provide instruction within a more flexible format than regular public schools. This flexibility comes from being exempt from much of the operating requirements (i.e. teacher union contracts, facility requirements, etc), although they do have to meet the state’s academic standards. They may be created and organized by a group of teachers, parents, community leaders or a community-based organization. Charter schools serve a wide-range of students depending on specific programming, ranging from youths exhibiting at-risk behavior or falling behind academically, those wanting vocational training, to college bound youth.

Profile of Student Served:
  • Need programming that accommodates culture, language, and/or interest area
  • Responsive to different learning styles, ie: (thematic learning, arts, music or community based learning)
  • Require smaller classes and a more structured setting than regular schools
  • School district will no longer accept student
